The Tema Circuit Court ‘A’ has ordered that Osumanu Sani Mohammed, a 25-year-old resident of Asensu Bar, Ashaiman, who threatened to kill his father, Osumanu Adama with a sharp cutlass, be sent to a psychiatric facility to ascertain his mental status.

Eric Kyei Baffour, the presiding judge, explained that the court came to the conclusion because it was convinced Osumanu Sani, who pleaded guilty, was not mentally sound.

The Circuit Court, which deferred sentencing, remanded Osumanu Sani Mohammed into police custody.

The court was hopeful he would be sent to a psychiatric facility for examination before his next appearance in court.

Earlier, prosecution informed the court that the complainant, Osumanu Adama, is the biological father of the accused person, Osumanu Sani Mohammed and they both reside in the same house at Asensu Bar, an Ashaiman suburb.

Prosecution noted that Sani Mohammed, a driver and known ‘wee’ smoker, terrorized his father and other occupants of the house.

He reportedly smoked in the house and defied the orders of his father.

Sani reportedly took offence anytime his father openly expressed displeasure at his conduct.

According to prosecution, he later developed the habit of verbally abusing the father.

Prosecution stated that on May 23, 2013 at about 7:00am, Sani Mohammed pursued a certain Mariamah, a tenant, to beat her up because she defied his order not to cook in the house again.

His father who was at home at the time, reportedly intervened and pleaded with Sani Mohammed to stop.

He reportedly rebuked the accused person and told him that the said Mariamah was a married woman who ought to be respected.

Perhaps annoyed by the action of his father, the 25-year-old driver reportedly slapped his unemployed father after which he lit some Indian hemp, pulled out a sharp cutlass and threatened to kill him.

In the morning of June 5, 2013, the accused reportedly chased Mariamah to beat her because she was standing in his way, and when the complainant tried to prevent him, he got offended and insulted him and in the process slapped him in the face. He also warned him to stop pleading for Mariamah.

As if that was not enough, he went into his room, pulled out a cutlass, and threatened to kill his father.

Some young men in the area assisted the complainant to arrest Sani Mohammed who was later handed over to the Police in Ashaiman.
