A-25–year-old mason was yesterday handed a 20 year jail term for defiling a five year old minor by an Accra Circuit court.

The convict, Shaibu Eliasu aka Alhaji is alleged to have on August 18, 2014 committed the act at Amomole, a suburb of Accra.

Appearing before the court presided over by Mrs. Rita Agyemang-Budu, the convict denied the offence but the court after full trial found the accused guilty of the offence.

The trial judge accordingly jailed Alhaji for 20 years to serve as a deterrent to others.

At the initial stages of the trial Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbiri told the court that the complainant, Gifty Aidoo, 25 is the mother of the victim and lives with the convict in the same neighbourhood.

He said on the day of the incident, Gifty went to plait her hair and sent the daughter to go and call her father in the house which is opposite Alhaji’s house.

D. /Insp. Atimbiri said Alhaji gave the victim 20 pesewas to buy him a sachet of water (pure water) but when the victim returned, he lured her into his room and had sexual intercourse with her.

The police officer said Alhaji after the act warned the victim not to tell anybody else she would die.

D./Insp. Atimbiri disclosed that a week after, Gifty saw some yellowish fluid in the pants of the victim and questioned the child about it and she confessed her ordeal to the mother leading to the arrest of Alhaji.

According to the police officer, the convict in his caution statement admitted the offence.
