The Kumasi Gender-Based Court has sentenced a 20-year-old mechanic to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for defiling a nine-year-old girl.

Kwame Boadi Gyamfi pleaded guilty to committing the crime.

Police Chief Inspector Philip Yao Bebli told the court presided over by Justice Rita Agyemang-Budu that the convict lived in the same house with the victim and her family at Afrancho-Bronkong in Kumasi.

The prosecution said on November 4, at about 1730 hours, Gyamfi lured the little girl to an uncompleted building, and sexually abused her when the victim was going to her elder sister at a nearby house.

Chief Insp. Bebli said the convict warned the girl not to tell anybody about her ordeal, but the victim informed her mother about the case when she got home.

The prosecution said the mother reported the case to the police, and a medical form was issued for medical examination and treatment of the girl.

Chief Insp. Bebli said a medical report indicates that the girl has been defiled.

The prosecution said Gyamfi, who went into hiding, was seen by the complainant at a spot near the Suame-Magazine in Kumasi on December 16.

The court heard that the complainant raised the alarm and he was assisted by some neighbours to arrest Gyamfi and handed him over to the police.

Chief Insp. Bebli said Gyamfi admitted defiling the girl in a caution statement.
