The Police in Accra has seized sophisticated weapons, including military grade guns and ammunition, from a 43-year-old ex-convict, who is currently assisting in investigations.

The weapons are one AK 47 riffle, one SMG riffle, 188 rounds of G3 ammunition, 77 rounds of AK 47 ammunition, two AK 47 magazines, two G3 magazines, 48 G3 empty shells and 15 rounds of ammunition of an unknown gun.

Some of the weapons seized from his home @ Amamole, Wednesday night The rest are 72 rounds of pistol ammunition, three cutlasses, two screwdrivers, and three facemasks.

The Police say the suspect, Charles Donkor, who was convicted and fined in 2013 for possessing one revolver pistol and a pump action gun plus 29 rounds of ammunition, will be prosecuted.

“He is highly suspected to be dealing in illegal weapons, a hardened robber or a land guard,” Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, ACP Timothy YoosaBonga told journalists Thursday. TV3’s Peter Adattor who was at the briefing reported that Donkor was arrested Wednesday night at about 11:30 from his home at Amamole near Pokuasi in the Ga West municipality by a team of police officers.

The police has meanwhile warned it will smoke out persons dealing in illicit arms trade in order to preserve the peace in the country before, during and after the December 7 elections.

“…Persons who are in possession if such illicit arms and with ill motives shall be smoked out of the system to preserve the peace,” ACP Bonga warned, and appealed to the public to support its drive.

He indicated that “the proliferation and circulation of illicit weapons at this time of the political season for whatever reason breeds a fertile ground for insecurity” and that the police will stop at nothing to clamp on dealers.
