The magistrate court in Dambai has sentenced a woman, Lydia Dotse, to 12 months behind bars after trafficking her 8-year-old son.

Investigations show that the middle-aged mother had offered her son to a trafficker by name, Mr. Nyadzo, on the Volta Lake at a cost of 300 cedis.

Director of the anti-trafficking agency, Partners in Community Development Programme, George Achibra, reveals that the arrest was made after police in Krachi resolved to rescue the young victim.

“The police in Krachi had been tipped off and followed up to orchestrate the arrest of the man and rescue the boy. The mother was also arrested for accepting the GHC100 from the man and charged with conspiracy to traffic and trafficking of her son,” he added.

Ghana is among the countries with the highest rate of human trafficking. This has seen government initiate measures to clamp down on human traffickers by strengthening all boarders.

A top government official who acted as the former deputy head of mission to Saudi Arabia, Hajia Hawawu Boya Gariba, has revealed that the menace of human trafficking in Ghana is secretly being spearheaded by top government officials.
