Cape Coast, Jan. 12, GNA - Two taxi drivers suspected to be armed robbers have been arrested by the Central Regional Police Command. Emmanuel Appiah and Kojo Awere, both from Yamoransa in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamanke se District are assisting the police in investigations.
A third suspect Kwame Appiah a taxi driver operating in Accra is on the run and being sought by the police.
Police Superintendent Edward Tabiri, Central Regional Crime Officer, briefing newsmen at Cape Coast on Thursday, said on the night of December 17, last year, a victim reported to the police that he had been robbed.
He said the victim joined an Elmina bound taxi cab with registration number CR 436 X at the DVLA junction near GOIL Filling station on the Accra-Takoradi highway with two other passengers already on board.
Police Superintendent Tabiri said on reaching Ameen Sangari Industries junction, one of the passengers at the back seat with the victim, allegedly pulled a pistol and ordered him to surrender all his money and mobile phone.
He said the victim turned to the driver and another passenger for assistance but the driver turned a deaf ear to his plea, while the third passenger also pulled out a knife and asked him to oblige or be stabbed. Police Superintendent Tabiri said the victim then surrendered all his money and mobile phone to them after which he was thrown out of the vehicle but he managed to take the registration number of the taxi cab and reported the incident to the police.
He said on December 21, the victim spotted the taxi cab at Abura, a suburb of Cape Coast and with the assistance of some people arrested the driver, later identified as Emmanuel Appiah.
Police Superintendent Tabiri said during interrogation, Appiah told the police that it was rather Kwame Appiah now at large, who was driving the vehicle when the incident occurred and mentioned Awere as their accomplice.
He said during police investigations, it received information from the police in Kumasi that Awere had been arrested in Kumasi for allegedly stealing a Hyundai Excel saloon car with registration number CR 358 U and a locally manufactured pistol was found on him.
Police Superintendent Tabiri advised car owners to be alert and take the necessary security precautions to outwit such miscreants while the public should beware of suspicious characters anytime they board vehicles.
