Over 4,000 drivers who were arrested for road traffic regulations in 2013 were prosecuted, a senior official of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has revealed.

He said the action was part of measures to reduce road accidents in the country. He noted that the figure is about 500 more than what was recorded in 2012.

Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP) Alex Kweku Obeng, the Director of Education, Research and Training at the Department, made this known over the week in an interview on TV3’s Midday Live.

“We have not only been proactive but we have been reactive,” he said as regards the punitive measures taken against offending road users.

He cautioned drivers to be circumspect on the roads and observe traffic regulations during and after the holidays.

He said the police have also beefed up security in the various regions with the Community Policing Unit and about more personnel have been deployed around the country to ensure that drivers observe traffic regulations during the holidays.

The number of officers to ensure safety on the roads was increased from 800,000 in 2012 to 1.3 million in 2013, he stated.
