Pastor remanded for stealing church funds

Accra, May 12, GNA - Isaac Niitan Cofie, a pastor of the Ecumenical Church, was on Friday remanded for one week by an Accra Regional Tribunal on charges of conspiracy to steal and stealing an amount of 204 million cedis from to the Loan Fund of the Church. In the dock with Cofie was Victoria Tiwaa Cofie, a cashier of the church was also remanded on the same counts.

The facts of the case as narrated by the prosecution were that between 2004 and 2005, the church's branch at Techiman employed Isaac and Victoria as pastor and cashier respectively.


The prosecution said in January this year, Isaac became aggrieved and resigned when he was transferred to Accra.


The prosecution stated that after Isaac's resignation, an audit carried out at the Techiman branch of the Loan Fund where he worked revealed that the two accused persons had conspired to steal a total of 204 million cedis.

The matter, according to the prosecution, was reported to the Techiman Police and Isaac was arrested, while Victoria fled to the Northern Region.


The prosecution said Isaac jumped bail and fled with Victoria to Cote d'Ivoire.


The prosecution stated the accused persons were arrested in Cote d'Ivoire with the help of INTERPOL and escorted to Ghana.
