Wonder Kovey, 31, a Police Constable was shot dead early Friday morning by an unknown gunman during special operations at Sorokpome, an area believed to be a notorious criminal hub at Aflao.

Mr Ebenezer Kweku Asare, Superintendent of Police in charge of Police operations in the Volta Region told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) the incident happened around 0630 hours.

He said the body of the dead policeman had been transported to Police hospital in Accra for autopsy.

Mr Asare said ongoing investigations by the Homicide Unit would determine the nature of the incident, and whether the gunshot was a friendly or enemy fire.

He said the operation was based on intelligence reports that criminals had made the area a market for stolen items, especially electronic wares.

Mr Asare said as the Police team approached an alley, there was a gunshot from nearby and that Constable Kovey went down, the bullet going penetrating from behind through the chest.

Mr Asare said the Police was doing everything to clear the Aflao area of criminals who were terrorizing the people and asked for the cooperation of community members.

Family members of the slain policeman have converged at the Police station wailing.

Mr Pascal Lamptey, Ketu-South Municipal Chief Executive has convened a Security Meeting to discuss developments.
