Police arrest 22 suspected foreign illegal miners

The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department has arrested 22 foreign nationals suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.

The arrest of the Togolese was effected on January 23 when a team of police officers intercepted a Kia truck with registration number BA 223-12.

The vehicle was being driven by suspect Abdul Majeed Yakubu.

Upon interrogation, the occupants stated that they were nationals of Togo and were travelling to Tuntumba, a known illegal mining community, with the intention of engaging in “galamsey” activities, a release copied to the Ghana News Agency said.

“The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for the necessary immigration and legal processes,” it said.

“Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated in due course.”
