Five teenagers between 16 years and 19 years, are being held by the police over alleged sale of fake mobile phones at Kejetia, Kumasi.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abdullai Iddrisu of the Special Weapon Assistance Team (SWAT) told the media at a briefing that, the Police acted on information received from the public.
They seized from Owusu Ansah, Prince Aprakwa, alias “Abe”, Kwadwo Antwi, Stephen Adarkwa and Yaw Mensah, large quantity of counterfeit phones alongside genuine ones.
Explaining their modus operandi, DSP Iddrisu said the suspects enticed the unsuspecting buyer with a genuine phone at reduced price, but cleverly swapped it with a fake Samsung phone, stuffed with all sorts of materials, including soap, after a purchase.
He said majority of their victims were travelers and traders at the Kejetia lorry terminal, Kumasi Central and Asafo markets, Mbrom, Adehyeman and Abrepo Metro-Mass Transit Station.
The suspects would quickly relocate to different points after playing the trick on their victims, he said.
DSP Iddrisu said the police were convinced the teenagers had not been acting alone and that everything would be done to track down their accomplices and bring them to justice.
He urged the public to be more vigilant and to be mindful of what, who, and where they buy from.
