Five suspected criminals, believed to be behind a number of robbery attacks in Kumasi and other outlying communities have been arrested by the police.
They are Mathias Acquaisi, Osei Kofi, alias “Red," Ernest Gyau, Atibilla Ayine and Toffic Nuhu.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Kwaku Ampofo Duku, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the alleged robbers were seized on April 2, following police intelligence.
He said three of the robbers, Mathias, Osei and Gyau would usually block roads in the Atwima-Foase area and rob travelers of their cash and other valuables.
He said on March 14, the robbers were engaged in a deadly shooting after a taxi, with the registration number AS 1588-10, they had snatched from its driver developed mechanical fault at Nkwanta leaving four people with gunshot wounds.
ACP Duku told newsmen that one of the victims was still on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and described his condition as critical. The others had been treated and discharged.
He said some of their robbery victims had already identified them to the police.
The Deputy Commander said Nuhu and Ayine belonged to a different criminal gang and were nabbed at the Tafo Cemetery as they prepared to launch an attack on travelers.
A short gun and an axe were retrieved from them.
He appealed to the public to provide the police with useful leads to help rid the society of criminals.
Meanwhile, the police have offered a GH¢1,000.00 reward to anyone who would give information leading to the retrieval of a rifle used by the robbers.
