Kumasi, Aug. 11, GNA - The Asokwa police on Wednesday night arrested a 19-year-old taxi driver for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old pupil of the Ahinsan primary school at Atonsu in Kumasi, resulting in her death.

Kwabena Oppong was found by the police lying beside the dead girl behind a house near the Atonsu market very drunk.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency on the incident in Kumasi on Thursday, Superintendent Johnson Owusu-Agyemang, the Asokwa District Police Commander, said the parents of the girl reported to the Asokwa police at about 1800 hours on Wednesday that she was missing. He said at about 2200 hours, he had a report that the girl had been found dead behind a house near the Atonsu market.

Supt Owusu-Agyemang said the police therefore proceeded to the spot and found Oppong lying beside the dead girl very drunk and so he was arrested.

He said at the time police found the body, blood was oozing from her mouth, nose and private part and that the body had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for autopsy.

When GNA contacted Mr Abubakar Amidu, father of the deceased girl, he said the daughter was about to take her bath but informed her mother that she was attending to nature's call at about 1800 hours. He said, however, that they waited for her for a long time but she did not return. They looked for her but could not find her until later in the night when a young girl told them that she saw the deceased being taken away by a certain man.

According to Mr. Amidu, at about 2200 hours, the family got information that a girl had been found dead and a young man lying beside her at the Atonsu market.

He said when they proceeded to the scene, he saw the daughter lying dead and the suspect lying beside her and when his manhood was examined, it was covered by blood.
