Police arrests six suspected armed robbers at Ejura

Mampong (Ash), June 2, GNA - Mampong Divisional Police Command, led by Chief Superintendent Edward Oduro-Kwaten, have arrested six criminals suspected to be part of an armed robbery gang, operating at Techiman, Atebubu and Yeji and terrorizing people at Ejura and its environs. The suspects, whose ages range between 25 and 31, are Mohammed Yusif, Razak Akilu, Wallidu Beliamidu, Nounzel Alhassan, Alim Yaw and Abdul Kadiri Adam.

Briefing the press at Mampong, the Divisional Commander said, 12 people including a lady were arrested during a dawn raid at Ejura last Saturday.

He explained that the six suspects who have been under police surveillance for some time would be arraigned as soon as the police complete their investigations. The police retrieved one locally manufactured pistol, two live ammunitions, two scissors, four empty perfume bottles and other items from the suspects.

Chief Supt. Oduro-Kwaten expressed regret that while some good citizens in the area are helping the police in combating crime, others are obstructing their work, citing an instance at Ejura where a suspect was aided to escape.

In another development, the Divisional Command has retrieved and handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a Nissan Urvan commercial vehicle, with registration number AS 6143 C, which was reported to have been snatched from a driver at gun point on May 25, at Apatrapa, a suburb of Kumasi by unidentified criminals.

According to the police, the vehicle was found abandoned at Abonkosu, a village, near Nsuta in the Sekyere Central District on last Saturday, May 30.

He said on the same day, the police smashed a goat stealing syndicate operating between Mampong and Nkwanta in the Mampong Municipality.

He said a taxi cab with registration number AS 3254 W, which was used by the syndicates had been impounded by the police while the suspects, Yaw Afriyie, the driver, Kweku Brusah, a butcher are in police custody assisting in investigation. However, one Gabriel, a suspect is on the run.
