Two nannies have been nabbed for allegedly drugging an employer’s twin toddlers
The Airport Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Accra has detained two nannies for allegedly giving sleep inducing substances to twin toddlers under their care at East Legon in Accra.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, October 7, 2025, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Public Affairs Unit said the suspects, Francisca Boakye, a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region were apprehended after the children’s mother, a 40-year-old businesswoman, filed a complaint in September 2025.
Superintendent Obeng explained that the complainant began to worry when she noticed her two-year-old sons becoming unusually sleepy and behaving strangely.
“Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspects had allegedly been adding a medication believed to induce sleep to the children’s daily milk for about seven to eight months.

“They reportedly did this without their employer’s knowledge to make the twins sleep longer so they could attend to other chores," she noted.
Superintendent Obeng further noted that one of the accused, Harriet Ansah admitted to mixing the substance in the twins’ food but claimed that she learned the act from her colleague, Francisca Boakye.

“Harriet also confessed to mistreating the children, including hitting their heads and calling them offensive names such as ‘chimpanzee," Superintendent Obeng noted.
Police reports indicate that both suspects had worked for the complainant for roughly eight months.
A search of their room led to the discovery of two used and four unused sachets of the suspected drug, which have since been forwarded for forensic testing.
“Both accused persons have been cautioned, charged with the appropriate offences, and remanded into police custody. They are scheduled to appear in court on October 20, 2025,” Superintendent Obeng added.
She stressed the need for parents and guardians to be vigilant in monitoring domestic staff.
