The Ghana Police Service has deployed a special investigation team to Ntoroso in the Ahafo Region to probe the circumstances surrounding a violent confrontation between suspected thieves and police personnel.

The deployment follows a violent incident on January 8, 2025, in which three people were killed and four others injured after armed thieves attempted to break into the Newmont mining site, resulting in a security breach and confrontation with police personnel.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 9, 2025, the police said that a reinforcement team was also deployed to the community to maintain peace and order.

“A special investigation team from Accra has been sent to the area to investigate the incident whilst a reinforcement team has also been sent to the community to help ensure that there is peace, security, law and order,” parts of the statement read.

The security service further confirmed that calm has been restored in the area, and the situation has been contained to prevent any escalation.

“The Ghana Police Service has restored calm at Ntoroso in the Ahafo Region following an attempted breach of security at the Newmont mining site by some persons to allegedly steal gold last night, Wednesday, 8th January 2025,” it added.

The police indicated that due process is being followed to ensure the release of the deceased victims to their families for burial, as the victims were Muslims.

“The Police have received information that the three deceased victims are Muslims, and the due process of the law is being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later today,” it added.

Meanwhile, the police are urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
