The drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Eastern Regional Police Command has impounded a gallon of “Wee bitters” and 12 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in two fertilizer sacks.
The suspect in possession of the contraband Solomon Agyare, 27, is currently in the custody of regional CID assisting with the investigation.
The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh explained to Starr News that on September 7, 2018, at about 4:55 pm police personnel on duty at Nkurakan checkpoint arrested and brought to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, the suspect together with 12 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp .
He said the substance was concealed in two fertilizer sacks and one yellow gallon of local drink popularly known as ‘akpeteshie’.
According to DSP Tetteh, the suspect was on-board a commercial transport – Hyundai H-100 with registration number GS 9031- 12 and driving from Klo-Agogo to Koforidua.
He said on reaching the said barrier, the driver was signaled to stop for a search to be conducted in the vehicle. While the search was ongoing, continued DSP Tetteh, the suspect jumped out of the vehicle in an attempt to escape but was swiftly apprehended.
He said the contraband was uncovered following thorough combing of the vehicle and that the suspect has admitted ownership during interrogation.
“The suspect has been detained for investigation. Efforts are being made to trace and apprehend the supplier while exhibits are retained to be forwarded to Forensic Lab for analytical examination and report,” DSP Tetteh told Starr News.
Most communities in the Yilo Krobo district are notorious for the cultivation of marijuana as farmers say it is more lucrative than crop farming. Previous approaches deployed to clamp down on the menace proved futile.
Many peddlers in the illicit drug smuggling chain sneak to the area to purchase many quantities of the substance from the farmers making it a booming business.
On August 7, 2018, the Nkurakan police arrested Iddrisu Yakubu, 38, with two fertilizer sacks containing 44 compressed slabs of Marijuana mixed with dried cassava popularly known as Konkonte’.
Also two weeks ago, police destroyed acres of marijuana farms in Nkurakan community and arrested the farmer.
