The man suspected to have killed Police Constable Michael Kporyie has been shot dead by the Police, says Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) George Tuffuor, Tema Regional Police Commander.

He made this revelation on Wednesday in a press briefing at the Tema Regional Police Command, Tema.

DCOP Tuffuor identified the deceased as 33 year-old Alhassan Adams popularly known as Dogo America who was the leader of a notorious land guard and robbery gang.

He said police intelligence led to the dispatching of police officers from the Tema Regional Police Command to Aviation No. 7, Washington, Ashaiman, and upon arrival, two of the gang members fled on a motorbike and a trail on them led the Police to the house of Dogo America.

He said that a search on the facility revealed one AK47 rifle and one SMG rifle on the veranda of the house which were displayed as if they were being serviced.

Mr. Tuffuor indicated that two persons arrested on the compound mentioned Dogo America as the one who was servicing the weapons, and as the police entered the building, Dogo America suddenly dropped down from his ceiling armed with an SMG rifle ready to shoot.

“The Police promptly fired at him and rushed him to the Police Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” he said.

DCOP Tuffuor said Dogo America had been on the wanted list for many crimes involving robbery, possession of firearms, attempted murder, causing harm and use of offensive weapons.

“The deceased had been granted bail in all cases, but had jumped bail for which reason he was already on police wanted list,” he informed.

He said the Police picked up four suspects within the premises to assist investigations, and they found one AK47 rifle, two SMG rifles, a dagger, a machete, a pair of pliers, two screw drivers and 12 rounds of live ammunition.

Mr. Tuffuor informed that Dogo America commanded at least 60 armed and trigger-happy land guards, and that he was believed to have a stock-pile of arms and ammunition.

“Two AK47 rifles and ammunitions concealed in a sack were retrieved by the Police on July 30, 2015 from one of his hideouts at Doryumu, and eight weapons were retrieved from Himat, his block factory at Gbetsile,” he said.

He indicated that a member of his gang engaged the police in a shootout at Community Nine, Tema, which resulted in the death of a gang member.
