Sunyani (B/A), July 20, GNA - The police have busted three suspected armed robbers who attempted to attack and rob passengers travelling on the Techiman-Kintampo road on July 13 this year.
The suspects, all residents of Techiman, included Isaac Boateng, 20, a welder, Scott Fosu, 20, a mason and Prince Boakye, 18, a Junior High School graduate.
Another accomplice in the case Kofi Gyan, 19, a motor bike mechanic, was also arrested in Techiman after interrogation of the suspects.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Tuesday, ASP Savior Ahiamadi, Acting Brong=96Ahafo Crime Officer, said the police who were on night patrol received a tip=96off that a group of armed robbers were preparing to attack passengers at Manso on the Techiman-Kintampo road.
He said the police rushed to the village and found some vehicles stuck in the mud on the portion of the road under construction.
He said the police took positions and saw a taxi cab with registration number BA 91 X with three occupants and the driver.
The police, suspecting that they were armed robbers, ordered the driver to stop.
ASP Ahiamadi said the police conducted a search on the occupants as well as the taxi cab and found a jack knife, two torch lights and three mobile phones with two spare batteries, as well as a bunch of keys suspected to be car keys on Fosu.
He said the suspects, including the driver of the taxi cab, were later escorted to the charge office in Techiman where the taxi driver sped off with the police man escorting him and ran into a ditch.
ASP Ahiamadi said the police went to the rescue of their colleague who was however unhurt but the driver escaped.
He said when the taxi cab was searched again two machetes, a military uniform and an ID card were found, adding, efforts were being made to arrest the driver.
ASP said another search was made at the suspects' homes but nothing incriminating was found.
The acting crime officer disclosed that the police also retrieved CFA 42,000.00 and GHC50.00 from the suspects.
