Ho, July 31, GNA - Two young men described by the Police as "notorious highway robbers" operating between Nkwanta and Dambai in the Volta Region have been arrested by the Police upon a tip-off. Simon Azumah, 24, and Ebenezer Azuma, 22, were trailed and arrested by the Police after they had attacked and robbed travellers at Kwame-Akura between Ado-Nkwanta and Dambai at around 0100 hours on July 27 2009.

Mr David Ampah-Benin, Volta Regional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the travellers had been waiting for about five hours for their broken down vehicle to be fixed when five armed men descended on them firing guns and brandishing knives and took away their monies and other valuables.

He said the Police arrested the two, alleged to be the leaders of the gang, the next day. The Police Regional Commander said the arrest of the two robbers would give some respite to traders, who travelled to and from the fish, vegetable and yam markets in the area.

He said the Police were on the trail of accomplices of the two men, warning that the Police were poised to flush out all robbers. Mr Ampah-Benin appealed to travellers who had fallen victim to robbery on the Nkwanta-Dambai road to come forward to identify the robbers to facilitate their prosecution.
