Police nab weapons supplier

A 35-year-old black-smith has been arrested by the police for allegedly manufacturing weapons at Awutu Bawjiase, near Kasoa, in the Central Region.

The suspect, Alfred Kumah Vidzah, a resident of Bawjiase, is said to be the source of supply of weapons to armed robbers.

Vidzah is reported to have been in the business for the past four years, selling the weapons between GHC 300 and GHC600.

The Kasoa District Police Crime Office, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Moses Naa-Kolga Agbegne, told the Ghanaian Times yesterday that, following a tip-off, a policeman feigned interest and made a deposit of GHC 100 for a gun, promising to pay the balance of GHC200 later.

The police then mounted surveillance on Vidzah and arrested him on February 5, at about 5: 30am, at the Bawjiase Lorry Station, with two locally-manufactured pistols believed to be for a customer.

A search of his room revealed a sack of weapons and tools of his trade. Vidzah could not produce a license when quizzed.
