The Akuse Police in the Eastern Region have arrested one Philip Adehenu of Gemeni in the Volta Region for robbing three women of various sums of money totalling GHS7,080.
On March 7, 2013, Adehenu, 30, managed to lure a local restaurant operator, Nancy Amedzro at Mepe in the Volta Region to a bush at Natriku Junction, near the VRA Ranch at Akuse where he stole her money under the guise of selling tilapia to her.
The Commander of the Akuse District Police, ASP Michael Omari Boakye told DAILY GUIDE that suspect Adehenu contacted fish sellers in Accra and the Volta Region and promised to give them a large quantity of fish for sale.
He told them he had a pond at Akuse where he sold the fish at a very low cost. The women showed interest in the proposal only to be robbed midway. Adehenu did not only rob Nancy but made her go naked and further threaten to kill her, he indicated.
The 40-year-old woman however told police that she pleaded with the armed robber to allow her offer her last prayers before her demise.
According to reports, the robber allowed her to pray but as she knelt down naked to pray to God and ancestors to come to her rescue, the robber and his accomplice, who is currently on the run, bolted away.
Her shouts attracted a Good Samaritan who helped her find her way back to Mepe.
Though she failed to report the case, she searched for the suspect who she believed lived at Mepe.
Fortunately, she had information that a suspect had been arrested in a similar case.
She arrived at the Akuse District Police Headquarters on Tuesday to identify the suspect, who pleaded for forgiveness and attributed his actions to evil forces.
Suspect Adehenu told DAILY GUIDE that his ancestral gods wanted him to be the fetish priest for his family shrine, but his refusal to take up the role resulted in his current behaviour.
The police said Adehenu served four years at the Akuse prisons.
He was discharged on June 15, 2012 after serving his term following his conviction in a stealing case by a Somanya Court.
Another victim, Elizabeth Animbre, 31, recounted how she was approached by Adehenu in Accra last week.
She claimed the suspect slept in her home at Kasoa because it was too late to send him away.
She said early the next morning they set off to Akuse together with one Vida, who is also a fish seller.
According to her, she had GHS1,200 while Vida was in possession of GHS3,000.
Adehenu, according to her, claimed three tilapia were being sold for GHS20 at Kasoa as against eight for GHS10 from his pond at Akuse.
The two friends, who were satisfied with the low prices, followed him until they got to a bushy path at Akuse around 6:30pm where two more people joined the suspect to assault and robbed them.
Elizabeth said they asked Vida to leave after taking her money.
“I called on my hometown’s god and I don’t know what happened but I appeared at a different location. I wounded that night in the bush till I found my dress by the roadside," she said.
Thereafter some white men spotted her and took her to the police station where she narrated her ordeal.
The Akuse Police managed to arrest the suspect on Monday, March 18, 2013.
The suspect has since been detained at the Akuse Police cells and would soon be arraigned before the Somanya Magistrate Court after investigations.
