Robber discharged after one year on remand

A Circuit Court in Accra has discharged Kwabena Ebow, a factory hand, who is being held on a robbery charge. Ebow, who was remanded by the court on July 2, last year, has never been brought to court but was kept in Police custody for a year.

This was after the trial judge, Mr Francis Obiri, had issued an order to the La Police Commander and threatened that he was going to report the conduct of the Police Investigator to the Inspector General of Police that resulted in the new development.

The case investigator, whose name was given as Inspector David Bondon, after the threat of the judge, brought the accused to court on July 3, this year. When the case was called there was no prosecutor assigned to handle the case, as the original prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Reindolf Agyeman had passed on.

The court therefore discharged him after missing court sittings for a whole year. Ebow was standing trial for allegedly snatching the bag of one Dorothy Ghansah, valued at GH¢ 20. The bag contained GH¢ 70 cedis and other personal effects totaling GH¢ 73.

Ebow on May 9, 2012, at about 1730 hours, met Ms Ghansah, who was on her way home and on reaching a spot, Ebow and his accomplice now at large allegedly pulled a knife on the complainant and covered her mouth while his accomplice made away with her bag.

Ebow bolted after the act. Later the matter was reported to the Police at La and investigations into the matter led to the arrest of Ebow.
