Robber jumps to his death to avoid arrest

Tema, Feb. 27, GNA - A suspected robber died instantly when he fell headlong into a 22- metre drain behind the wall of a warehouse, he scaled over to escape arrest from the Police.

He was among a 10- member gang the Police was effecting their arrest at the warehouse in Tema, during the early hours of Sunday. The police however arrested five members of the gang whilst four of them managed to escape and are still on the run.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Daniel Laryea Odai, Tema Regional Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the operation was motivated by an intelligence report that some people were planning to rob goods from the warehouse belonging to Silver Platter Company, near the Ghana Textile Manufacturing Company.

He said a team of detectives were dispatched to keep surveillance. ACP Odai at about midnight on the third day of the surveillance a DAF truck with registration number GT4797G pulled up and drove to Shed Number Eight.

He said 10 suspects came out of the vehicle and broke the padlocks and started loading some gallons of vegetable oil into the truck. ACP Odai said after they have loaded about 270 gallons the police pounced on them and made the arrest that comprised the driver of the truck.

He said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital Morgue awaiting identification by relatives. ACP Odai said the suspects who ranged between 24 to 30 years mentioned their names as Kwamina Mustapha, a resident of Ashaiman, Kwaku Brempong, Kwesi Akrofi, Kofi Yirenkyi, and Joseph Annang. He said the suspects would appear before court on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.
