The Mile 7 District Police Command has apprehended a 40-year-old driver, who allegedly posed as a military officer and snatched a vehicle from its owner in Kumasi.

Samuel Arthur, who claimed to be a sergeant in the army, allegedly committed the act and escaped to Accra to avoid arrest.

The police mounted surveillance on the suspect and finally apprehended him with the said stolen car at Ofankor Barrier yesterday dawn on a tip-off.

Confirming the story to the media, Superintendent Ussif Tanko, the Mile 7 District Police Commander, said the police had information about his activities and apprehended him at Ofankor Barrier whilst driving a Kia Sorento with registration number AW 9434-14 from Ofankor Barrier towards circle area.

A search conducted in his car revealed the military uniforms.

Upon interrogation, the suspect initially told the police he was a military officer with the 48 Engineers Regiment.

He therefore gave his name as Staff Sergeant Samuel Arthur and went further to give his staff identity number as 1834.

The commander said when the police asked of the name of his commanding officer, the suspect mentioned only Sarpong.

Knowing very well that a soldier would not mention the name of his superior without adding his rank, they suspected him to be an imposter and asked him further questions about the military.

Suspect Arthur later confessed that the uniforms belonged to an uncle, who was a soldier with 48 Engineers Regiments.

“The suspect confessed that his uncle, whose name he gave as Hackman Adu, gave him a 207 vehicle to use and the uniforms were in the said bus.

Arthur said he decided to use the uniform for a while before returning them to the owner.

Investigations are still ongoing, and the police have called on the public to help them with investigations.
