Robbers grabbed with Kan Dapaah gun

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two young men who allegedly spearheaded various crimes including the robbery of Albert Kan Dapaah, former chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

The notorious robbers were Jalilu Masahamed, 24, a resident of Opeikua near Kasoa and Mamadu Amadu, also 24, a resident of Achimota in Accra.

Items retrieved from them included two foreign pistols- one belonging to Mr Kan Dapaah- two locally manufactured pistols, 14 pieces of AAA cartridges, 161 pieces of 9mm pistol cartridges, four masks, a big cutter, three screw drivers, a plier and a spanner.

The rest were a multi-TV decoder, a Samsung DVD machine, seven wrappers of Indian hemp, five pen drives, 16 pieces of hunting cartridges, two card readers, a plasma television, a motorbike, some quantities of rechargeable cards and some unspecified foreign currencies.

DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, who briefed journalists yesterday, said the suspects were arrested upon a tip-off in Accra.

The suspects were declared wanted by the police after being captured on various CCTV cameras of Forex Bureaux that were robbed recently.

The suspects also robbed and shot two foreign expatriates this year at Dzorwulu and Haasto, with their latest criminal activity being the robbery of a business man at Sowutuom, a suburb Accra.

On February 6, 2013, at about 10:30am, upon intelligence, police swooped on the suspects at a wee-smoking den at Achimota.

A search conducted in the room of Mamadu Amadu at Achimota by the Tesano district police led to the discovery of the two foreign pistols and some of the mentioned items, packed in a bag and hidden on top of his roof top.

One of the foreign pistols, which belonged to the former NPP MP for Afigya-Sekyere West in the Ashanti Region, was part of the items.

Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed that they were part of a gang that robbed the former MP and took away his pistol on September 25, 2012.

Their accomplices, including Aaron Apau, 27, Gator Dzosu, 28, Gabriel Donkor, and Kofi Rabbi are currently facing trial at the court.

Giving an account of their robbery expeditions to the media, DCOP Yohuno said the two, on February 1, 2013, robbed and shot one Christian Lopez, a Spanish national at her residence at Dzorwulu around 12:05am.

The two, using an unregistered motorbike, attacked the victim in her Toyota Fortuner 4X4 in front of her house and made away with her handbag containing some items, not yet known.

The victim was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for medical treatment, but was later flown back to Spain by her family for further medical attention.

The two again attacked a Forex Bureau at Dzorwulu and robbed the workers of their laptop computer, a mobile phone, an amount of $89,000, GH¢33,000, €1,300 Canadian $350, and £2,000.

An Egyptian diplomat, who was also transacting business at that moment, was also robbed and shot as well by the two.

Then on February 2, 2013, at about 2130 hours, the two again robbed and shot a German national on his right shoulder through his vehicle’s windscreen at Haatso Block Factory near ECOMOG Road.

The victim’s Ghanaian girlfriend, who gave a statement, said the two, using an unregistered motorbike, robbed the German of an amount of GH¢200, an IPad phone, and an omega wristwatch.

The victim had since been admitted at the Nyaho Clinic receiving treatment.

The two also confessed to robbing a Ghanaian businessman on February 1, 2013 at Sowutuom and taking away $15,000, and GH¢3,120.

The two snatched the money using their unregistered motorbike.

The suspects, currently in police custody, would be sent to court soon.

Meanwhile, the items retrieved would be used as exhibits, police said.
