Status of Police Station countrywide being reviewed-Minister

Accra, June 7-The Minister of Interior, Papa Owusu Ankoma on Tuesday said the Ghana Police Service is currently reviewing the status of the various police Stations in the country as part of the process of improving its operational capabilities and ensuring that all political districts are congruous with Police Districts.

He said to this end, the Agona Nkwanta Police station will be elevated to the status of a District Police Office and be accorded all the rights and responsibilities associated with this new status. The Minister said this on the floor of Parliament in an answer to a question by Mr Samuel Johnfia, NPP Ahanta West on whether he is aware the district still does not have any Police vehicle despite the assurance given by his Ministry over two years ago.

Papa Ankoma said there was expectation that work on the rehabilitation of a number of Land Rovers would be completed within some specific time frame to make it possible for a number of Districts and Divisional Police Stations to be allocated vehicles. "Unfortunately, the workshop undertaking the repairs encountered a number of problems which have affected the completion of the process."

"This has affected the allocation of vehicles not only to the Ahanta West District, but also to other districts, especially in the three northern regions of the country.

"In the meantime every effort will be made for at least one of the Land Rover vehicles being rehabilitated to be assigned to the Agona Nkwanta Police Station, " he said.

He said his ministry is looking forward to the day when all Police Stations in the country will be fully equipped with vehicles and other items to make it possible for them to function effectively and efficiently.

"Unfortunately, that seems to be something which we have to fight seriously for in view of the competing demands for the country's resources."
