Surety ordered to pay bail sum of 20 million cedis for failing to produce accused person

Cape Coast, Oct. 4, GNA- For failing to produce her son, Eric Thompson whom she stood surety for in a fraud case, a Magistrate court, presided over by Mr Beresford Acquah, on Tuesday ordered Nana Baidoo Kakariba a farmer to pay a bail sum of 20 million cedis or serve a six-month jail term.

In a motion, the prosecution pleaded with the court to order Nana Kakariba to pay the bail sum for her son who was granted bail of 10 million on June 25 last year to reappear on February 2 this but he failed to do so.

The case of the prosecution is that sometime in 2003 thieves broke into the room of the complainant and stole property valued more than 15 million cedis.

According to the prosecution, Thompson, a self- styled Herbalist and spiritualist, who lived in the same vicinity with the complainant told his sister, who is a friend to the complainant that he could help her recover her stolen items.

It said Thompson then demanded that the complainant should provide certain items, including needles, hooks, red, white and black candles, a ram cash of three million cedis and a bottle of schnapps to enable him perform some rituals to recover the stolen items. The prosecution said after collecting the items, Thompson could not recover the items and further demanded to have sex with the complainant to enable him to perform another ritual.

It said the complainant became suspicious and demanded her monies, but Thompson failed to do so and the matter was reported to the police. The prosecution said Thompson was put before court on June 25 last year and granted bail of 10 million with a surety to reappear on Feb. 7 this year, but he failed to appear and have since been at large. 04 Oct. 05
