Suspect who broke into exhibition room shot by Police

Akropong, July 25, GNA - A thirty-seven-year old ex-convict, Kwabena Boakye was on Monday shot dead at the Akropong Police Station when he and four others attempted to break into the Police Station exhibits store.

Boakye was said to have been convicted last year by the Akropong Circuit Court to Three months imprisonment for unlawful entry and stealing and had just finished serving the term.

The Eastern Regional Commander of the Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Reynolds Boakye, told the GNA that, at 02.00 hours on Monday morning, the Police Officer on duty at the station, heard an unusual noise at the premises, so he took a rifle and went round the station to check.

He said the police officer found four young men who on seeing them shouted in Akan language that the Police was coming and they took to their heels.

Mr Boakye, said suddenly after the four had run away, the deceased came out of the exhibit room leading to the police firing four warning shots for the deceased to stop but he refused and was hit and died instantly.

According to the Regional Commander, the exhibit room was near to the armoury and suspected that the deceased and his friends wanted to get to the armoury and commended the station officer for his alertness. He said when the body was searched later, the police found a long screw driver, a sharp knife and a wrapped substance suspected to be Indian hemp. The body had been sent to the police hospital in Accra, whiles investigation was being conducted to apprehend his accomplices. 25 July 2005
