Suspected Nigerian kidnapper arrested

The police have rescued a 50-year-old woman who was allegedly kidnapped at Achimota Mile 7 in Accra around 11 pm Monday.

One of the two suspects believed to be Nigerians has been arrested.

Public relations officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Effia Tenge who confirmed the story to TV3 News360 Tuesday said the suspects had tied the woman and were trying to reach her husband for a ransom when they were apprehended.

DSP Effia Tenge said the police patrol team from the Amasaman Division saw unusual movement in the area, and they “strategically” trailed the movement of the two Nigerians to where they were keeping the woman.

They had initially told the police that their car had developed fault and just decided to hangout in the bush for the meantime when confronted.

But upon further search around, the police found the middle-aged woman with both hands and legs tied “crying for help”.

The suspected kidnappers decided to run away but one of them called Isaac was arrested by the police.

The woman, whose name has not been given, told the police that she had returned home from work in the evening, not knowing the suspected kidnappers had entered the house.

They ransacked the house and held her hostage in her own car and later drove her to a “think bush in Amasaman”.

A caretaker in her house was found unconscious after the attack and is currently on admission at the Police Hospital in a “very critical condition”.

“It is a very worrying trend, and what the police wish to say is that the foreigners in our country should not undermine the hospitality of the host, and that we will not permit this crime to prevail”, Mrs Effia Tenge said, adding that all resources would be mobilized to counter the activities of these criminals.

In a related development, Criminal Investigations Department of the police has revealed it has in partnership with the Bureau of National Investigations established the whereabouts of the three Takoradi girls who were kidnapped last year in the Western Region.
