Suspects arrested over online fraud using AI-generated Mahama clips

Police have arrested 11 people accused of using AI-generated videos to impersonate President John Dramani Mahama online.

The suspects were picked up during operations in parts of the Volta Region, including Aflao, Sogakope and Akatsi.

Investigators say the group allegedly used fake digital content to trick people into sending money and personal information online. Some of the suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals.

Items retrieved during the operation included laptops, phones, internet devices, pre-registered SIM cards and a Mercedes-Benz vehicle with Nigerian registration.

Police said initial investigations suggest the suspects may be linked to a wider online fraud network.

Nine suspects have been remanded by the court, while two were granted bail.
