Tema, Oct 22, GNA - The Tema Courts imposed a total of GH¢24,272 fines on drivers for committing motor traffic offences in the Tema Police Region between January and September this year. The offences include over speeding, driving without license, road obstruction, overloading, and drunk-driving.
Superintendent Daniel Ansong-Dankyi, Tema Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, (MTTU) disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency, in an interview.
Supt Ansong-Dankyi said 98 drivers were arrested during the period out of which 82 were charged for court, while 14 were served with warning letters.
He stated that while three cases were still pending at the courts, 81 drivers were convicted of various charges. He called on drivers to drive defensively and observe the traffic laws of the country to avoid being prosecuted. The Tema MTTU Commander also appealed to the government and other stakeholders to help the unit with logistics such as patrol vehicles, speed guns and reflective jackets to enable personnel to discharge their duties efficiently.
He said the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has tasked the MTTU outfits to do everything possible to help reduce the increasing rate of accidents on the roads. Supt Ansong-Dankyi again said the MTTU needed to be properly equipped to enable it to become very vigorous in bringing recalcitrant drivers to book. 22 Oct 10
