Akyem Oda Oct.11 GNA-Three suspected armed robbers were on Tuesday arrested at Akwatia and placed in police cells at Akyem Oda pending further investigations.
The robbers are Rabiu Mumuni 20, Dela Kakari 21 and Kofi Danso 19. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sampson Agbeko, the Akyem Oda Divisional Crime Officer told the Ghana News Agency that at about 1800 hours the police had an information that three suspected armed robbers were arrested at Saddams a suburd of Akwatia.
He said the suspects were being kept in house ready to be lynched by an angry mob so the police quickly moved in to the scene to rescue them. ASP Agbeko said the mob would not allow the police to take the suspects away and the police had to fire tear gas before they were able to whisk the suspects away.
"In the process one police officer sustained injuries while the mob caused extensive damage to a police vehicle", he said. The crime officer said when the suspects were later searched, a locally manufactured SB short gun and eight rounds of ammunition were found on Mumuni.
Mr Agbeko said it appeared that as armed robbers were now finding it difficult to operate in the cities due to effective police patrols, they were now focusing their attention on the rural areas. He however assured rural dwellers that the police were prepared to match those armed robbers boot for boot and urged the people to volunteer vital information to the police to enhance their work. 11 Oct. 06
