Three suspected sheep thieves before court

Asamankese, Nov. 4, GNA - Three men, two drivers and a butcher, have appeared before the Asamankese Circuit Court charged with stealing four sheep valued at about four million cedis. The plea of Kwadwo Oboubi and Kwame Takyi, both drivers and Kwadwo Peiwuye, the butcher, was not taken and they were remanded until November 7.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector S. A. Ntow said the three men were arrested at Sakyikrom near Akwatia, with four dead sheep in their taxicab.

The prosecutor said the two drivers lived at Kasoa, saying on October 21, the driver of the taxicab with registration Number GR 6919 Q who fell sick gave his car to Kwadwo Obuobi to drive for the day but Obuobi drove the car to Kasoa and picked up his friend Takyi. He said on October 22, the car was found at the outskirts of Sakyikrom with the three accused persons on board when it had broken down.

A passer-by who heard the bleating of the sheep in the boot of the taxi became suspicious and informed the town's neighbourhood watch committee who went to investigate. On seeing the watch committee members approaching, Takyi and Peiwuye took to their heels into the bush, leaving Obuobi in the vehicle, who was arrested.

When the car was searched, the animals were found suffocated to death and a search party combed the bush and succeeded in arresting Takyi and Peiwuye.

The Prosecutor said Peiwuye, on his arrest, claimed that the sheep were bought at Nkawkaw.

Chief Inspector Ntow said the Police were yet to accompany the three to Nkawkaw for them to locate the alleged seller of the animals.
