An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old trader, Kumah Apremeh, to three years imprisonment for supplying 888.14 grammes of cannabis without lawful authority.
Apremeh pleaded guilty and the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri sentenced him accordingly.
Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mary Agbozo said on April 5, last year at about 1830 hours a team of personnel of the Narcotic Unit of the Ghana Police Service received information that Apremeh was offering quantity of dried leaves suspected to be narcotics for sale.
The team laid surveillance at Madina Zongo Junction and they trailed Apremeh to a corn mill where he had kept the substance and was nabbed when he was about to sell it to a prospective buyer.
DSP Agbozo said the prospective buyer escaped and the dried leaves concealed in a mini fertilizer sack were seized. During interrogation, Apremeh said he bought the leaves from Okra Kwadwo, near Adukrom in the Eastern Region but failed to disclose his source of supply.
On May 21, last year, the dried leaves were forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for analytical examination; the test proved positive for cannabis with net weight of 883.14 grammes.
