Two Police Corporals remanded for alleged defilement

Kumasi, Sept. 5, GNA- Two policemen were on Tuesday remanded into police custody by a Kumasi circuit court for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old JSS graduate.

The two Daniel Oppong Darkwa and Kingsford Effah, both Lance Corporals with the Domestic Violence and Victims' Support Unit (DVVSU) of the Ashanti Regional Police Command were said to have defiled the girl on separate occasions in June and August this year.

They pleaded not guilty and will reappear before the court presided over by Mr Kwabena Adutwum Mmorosah on September 11, this year. Police Chief Inspector R.K Akoto, prosecuting told the court that, the victim lived with her aunt, who is also a police constable at the police barracks within the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, together with the suspects.

He said in June this year, Darkwa proposed to the victim who had just come to stay with the aunt from Konongo and had sex with her. On August 22, this year, Effah also proposed to her and lured her to a hotel at Susuanso in Kumasi and had sex with her without her consent, the Prosecutor said.

Chief Inspector Akoto, said the victim never informed anybody till August 28, when she fell sick and was questioned by her aunt before revealing her ordeal in the hands of Darkwa and Effah. He said a report was made to the police and during interrogation by the Regional Police High Command, Darkwa admitted having sex with her twice before.

The prosecutor said upon further investigations, the two suspects were charged with the offence.
