Two car robbers in court

An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday remanded one person into police custody and granted another bail for allegedly robbing a cabbie of his taxi cab.

Brian Ibrahim Adams, alias “Red” pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime to wit robbery and robbery and was granted a GH¢100,000.00 bail with two sureties one of whom must be a public servant.

His accomplice, Solomon Azure, alias Baba Sulley or 2PAC also pleaded guilty with the explanation that while struggling with Emmanuel Fosu Yeboah, the victim, without intention to hurt him a bottle broke and he stabbed him with it.

The Court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh remanded him into police custody.

They will make their next appearance on June 30.

Mr. Raphael Kofi Bonin, counsel for Adams prayed the Court to grant his client bail as he was innocent, not a flight risk, would be available to stand for trial to prove his innocence.

Police Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the Court that Yeboah is the complainant in the case and a resident of Sakumono and a taxi driver.

He said Adams is unemployed and resident of Kumasi whilst Azure is also unemployed, living at the Yam Market at Agbogbloshie in Accra.

He said in March, 2020, the accused met at Avenor Park in Accra, where they became friends and had been in touch since then, adding that during one of their conversations, Azure told Adams that he knew one Nana who was ready to pay a huge sum for stolen taxi cars.

Prosecution said based on this, on May 24, Adams came to Accra to lodge with Azure and they planned to snatch a taxi cab to sell.

Inspector Ahiabor said on June 2, at about 2340 hours, at Baatsona Total Filling Station, the two engaged Yeboah who was then in charge of a Daewoo Matriz taxi with the registration number GG 2486-18 to send them to Emef Estate at Lashibi near Sakumono.

He said Azure sat at the back of the driver and Adams sat at the front seat and that on reaching the Celebrity Golf Park area, Azure alerted the driver that they would alight and the cabby stopped.

He said Azure then got down and walked to the driver’s door as if he was going to pay the fare while Adams remained in his seat.

The prosecution said Azure broke a bottle he was holding and stabbed Yeboah on the shoulder a number of times and pulled him out of the vehicle.

Prosecution said Adam then jumped behind the steering wheel and being joined by Azure they sped off.

He said the complainant reported the incident to police where he was issued with a medical report form to attend hospital.

He said the next day at about 1000 hours, a police patrol team intercepted the two onboard the taxi at Pokuase, Ayawaso Junction where a search in it revealed a knife and electrical wire at the back seat.

The prosecution said they were arrested and handed over to the Sakumono Police for investigations where in their cautioned statement, they admitted the offence, adding that, they were on their way to hand over the vehicle to the said Nana before their arrest.
