Two jailed for supplying "Wee"

An electrician, Kojo Dei was on Wednesday sentenced to five years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for supplying cannabis in the Accra Metropolis.

Dei, who used his nephew Stephen Kofi Dadzie, a student as middleman to supply the drugs to prospective customers was sentenced to six month imprisonment by the court.

While Dei pleaded not guilty to two counts of supplying narcotic drugs without lawful authority Dadzie denied one count of supplying cannabis without lawful authority.

The court, presided over by Francis Obiri at the end of the trial found them guilty and convicted them accordingly.

The case presented by Mrs Rita Doko, a State Attorney told the court that on April 29, 2011, personnel of the narcotics unit of the Ghana Police Service proceeded to Alajo Railways in Accra.

An operation by the Anti-Narcotic Drug Unit led to the arrest of Stephen Kofi Dadzie at a school at Apenkwa, near Tesano in Accra.

The State Attorney said a search on Dadzie found 65 small wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis in a green polythene bag with the inscription “Arise Ghana”.

Dadzie claimed ownership of the drugs and told the Police that it was his uncle, Dei, who supplied him with the cannabis to sell.

Based on that, prosecution said on May 14, 2011, the Police made a follow up and arrested Dei at the same spot and a search conducted at his place of abode revealed that 44 wrappers of cannabis in black polythene bag placed under a chair, under a tree.

Dei told the Police that the cannabis belonged to him but declined to indicate his source of supply.

He further told them that he was the one who gave his nephew 65 wrappers of the cannabis to sell for him.

On June 14, 2011 the 65 wrappers of drugs found on Dadzie were sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory and tested positive with net weight of 93.3400 grammes while the 44 wrappers found on Dei tested positive with net weight of 92.734 grammes.
