Two of a-five-member gang arrested for allegedly stealing a quantity of shop items and cash valued at GH¢ 28,500.00 have been granted a GH¢20,000 bail with two sureties each by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Akwasi Wireko, unemployed and Charles Akundi, cleaner, who committed the alleged theft with three accomplices, now at large, have been charged with causing damage and stealing.
They however denied the charges and would re-appear in court on May 6.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen S. Tenkorang told the Court presided over by Mr John Ekow Mensah that the complainant, Mr Jocent Osei is the owner of Jocent Boutique at Asafo, which was burgled.
On April 21, at about 0300 hours, a witness in the case who saw that the complainant’s shop had being broken into raised the alarm on seeing the alleged thieves fleeing the scene with the booty.
These included a metal safe valued at GH¢600.00 in which an amount of GH¢8,500.00 has been stored, as well as quantity of shirts, wrist watches, waist belts and other items.
Sensing danger, they dropped the metal safe and some of the items and bolted.
The witness after retrieving the items left them in the care of Akundi, the cleaner and went back to the community to mobilise support.
On his return, Akundi told the witness that Wireko and the other three, now on the run, had come for the items.
A complaint was lodged with the Asokwa Police, who arrested Akundi and he subsequently led to the arrest of Wireko.
During investigation, the metal safe was found damaged a few meters from the shop without the GH¢ 8,500.00.
