Two remanded over stolen goats and sheep

Accra, Sept. 15, GNA - Two persons accused of stealing 12 sheep and six goats from Kwahu Jamasi to Accra on Thursday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Henry Owusu Mintah, 61, a butcher and Owusu Agyemang Kwakye, 35, a mechanic charged with conspiracy and stealing pleaded not guilty. They were remanded into Police custody to re-appear before the court presided over by Mrs Patience Mills-Tetteh on September 29. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) E.S.S. Koranteng prayed the court to remand the accused persons to enable the Police to trace owners of the livestock at Kwahu Jamasi. He told the court that the complainants were Police officers attached to the Highways Patrol Unit.

ASP Koranteng said in the morning of September 14, this month, the patrol team on duty along Accra-Kumasi trunk road at a spot near the Nsawam toll booth, some young men drew their attention to a black Toyota Tacoma Pick-up with registration number GC 3339 Z parked a few metres away from the booth with four occupants on board in a suspicious manner.

He said the policemen proceeded to the vehicle to ascertain where the occupants were going. The accused persons on seeing the policemen sped-off but two of them were apprehended by the Police team while the other two escaped. ASP Koranteng said when the vehicle was inspected, 12 live sheep and six goats, invoices and waybills purported to be issued by Guinness Ghana Limited, GAFCO-Tema and Veterinary Service, Tema bearing the name of one Mohammed Bugri were found. The prosecutor said when the accused persons were escorted to the Criminal Investigation Department, Headquarters in Accra they admitted stealing the livestock from Kwahu Jamasi. Meanwhile the livestock are in the custody of the Police. 15 Sept. 11
