Tema, Oct. 10, GNA - Two women, Juliana Azaglo, 39 and Abena Ayivor, 42, have been arrested by the Tema Regional Police for smuggling 107 pieces of assorted foreign wax prints into the country. A third suspect, a male, however, escaped when the Police intercepted the items.

According to the Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jonathan Yakubu, the Police had a tip-off in the early hours of Friday, October six, that some uncustomed goods had been smuggled into the country from Togo and were being conveyed to Accra. He said his men trailed and intercepted the targeted vehicle at Kesseih, near Ada and during inspection retrieved the wax prints. He said the Police would liaise with the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service to determine the value of the prints and that the two women would be arraigned.

The Regional Commander expressed concern about the alarming influx of contrabands into the country, saying it was causing the state to lose several millions of cedis.

ACP Yakubu said his outfit was working with local fishermen to expose the smugglers, adding that any informant who would provide leads for the arrest of such culprits would be adequately rewarded.
