UCC student remanded in Prison custody

Winneba, Feb. 20, GNA - Mr. Fred Asamoah, a 23 year non-resident Political Science student of the University of Education, Winneba, from Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region, has been remanded in prison custody by the Awutu Breku Magistrate Court for robbery. Mr C. A. Wilson, a Circuit Court Judge who presided as an additional Magistrate, did not take his plea and he will re-appear on the February 21, 2006.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Nicholas Gasu, in charge of the Winneba Police Command, giving the facts of the case said, on February 10, this year, the complainant, Mrs Christiana Appiah-Adjei, a chemical seller at Winneba, closed from work at about 10PM and while on her way home, she spotted someone coming towards her. Mr Gasu said the accused on reaching where the complainant was, instructed her to give him her handbag containing 700,000 cedis, a mobile phone and personal belongings.

The complainant, Mrs Asamoah refused but the accused pulled out a long screwdriver and started beating her with it, which resulted in a struggle.

Mrs Appiah-Adjei sensing danger, shouted for help. Mr Gasu said, the accused seeing people approaching took to his heels through the bush, but was apprehended and the complainant identified him as a student staying on the same block where her shop was located.

He was handed over to the police when he denied the offence but after investigation he was charged before the court. 20 Feb 06
