University student's suicide note makes no sense - Police

The Winneba Police in the Central Region have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of the University of Education Winneba, who allegedly committed suicide.

The level 100 Bachelor of Basic Education student, Solomon Obeng, was on Valentine’s Day, February 14, found hanging in his private residence at Abasraba, a suburb of Winneba.

Winneba District Police Commander, Superintendent Rev. John Opoku, who confirmed the incident to Ultimate Radio, said neighbors of the deceased found him hanging dead on a rope on that Friday dawn and reported the matter to the police.

“The investigation team led by the crime officer proceeded to the scene and found a male adult aged about twenty-three, who had hanged himself on a rope at his residence”.

Unconfirmed reports say the young man must have committed suicide because of fear of being withdrawn from the University for performing woefully in his exams. The school as a matter of policy expels students who fail in three subjects. However, Superintendent John Opoku could not verify that report except to say that it was a mere hearsay for now.

“That was just a hearsay and no one has exactly come to tell us that was the reason why he committed the suicide.”

He said they only found a note purported to have been written by the deceased indicating that he had been to the Ghana Armed Forces and that his parents loved him.

The Commander, however, said the statement which was not clearly written provided no clues for police to verify reasons why the bizarre act was committed.

The unusual incident which happened on Valentine’s Day came as a shock to both students of the university and residents alike.
