Nana Yaw Osei Nyarko Ampongsah, aka Captain, who has been on the police wanted list for some time now, has finally been arrested by the police.

The 62-year-old man has been accused of defrauding many innocent people of their monies under the pretext of selling cars to them over the past two decades.

Captain was apprehended by police at a drinking spot at Asafo, a suburb of Kumasi, last Wednesday.

The police had arraigned him before various courts on several occasions but strangely the courts released him.

DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, lauded the arrest of Captain in the region.

He said Captain on September 8, 2015 defrauded Yaw Opoku to the tune of GHc25,000 under the pretext of selling a car to him.

Addressing the press, the police chief said Ebenezer Ashon of Juaso initially showed interest in a Vibe Pontiac car which was being sold by Captain.

He said Mr. Ashon directed one Yaw Opoku to meet Captain to examine the car.

Opoku, after examining the car, informed Mr. Ashon that it was in good condition.

Mr. Ashon asked Opoku to retrieve money for the car from the wife Cecilia Ofori Amanfo.

Captain met Opoku at the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi, asked him to accompany him to the Manhyia Hospital where he (Captain) was receiving treatment.

At the hospital, Opoku handed over the money to Captain and demanded the ignition keys and documents covering the vehicle.

Captain said the car’s documents and his passport for the registration of the car were in the vehicle so he sent an errand boy to retrieve them for him.

After several minutes of waiting, Captain told Opoku that he (Captain) was going for the documents but he bolted away and went into hiding.

The case was later reported to the police which led to the arrest of Captain on Wednesday, DCOP Kofi Boakye remarked.

The police chief admonished people who want to buy cars to contact approved garages in the city to avert any future problems.
