An attack on the Sankore Police Station in the Brong Ahafo Region by some suspected criminals has left one police officer and a civilian in a critical condition at the Goaso Government Hospital.

Four other officers who suffered minor injuries in the Sunday evening attack have since been treated and discharged.

Police say one Kwadwo Makuudzi, an illegal lumbering operator in the town who has been on their wanted list for the past month, led the attack.

He was said to have early last month attacked a team of soldiers and forestry officials who prevented him from engaging in his illegal activities in the Abonwere Forest Reserve.

Again, he is wanted for attacking and robbing some Chinese nationals leaving them injured. They are still on admission.

Makuudzi and his group assaulted an officer who spotted him in town Sunday afternoon at about 3:00pm and attempted to arrest him.

The officer managed to get to the police station to report the incident based on which the Division Police Command called for reinforcement from Sunyani and Goaso.

By 6:00pm, the reinforcement team arrived at the Police Station but while preparing to be deployed, Makuudzi and his four-man gang approached at the station on three tricycles wielding stones, cutlasses and guns.

“As they approached the Police Station, they started firing at the police,” TV3 correspondent Larry Paa Kwesi Moses reported, adding, “In the process one of the officers was shot in the thigh”.

“The Police returned fire and hit the ringleader,” who was then arrested. His four accomplices however managed to escape from the scene.

The Police say they have mounted a search for the four suspects.
