Western Region police command fishes for kidnapper's CID accomplice

The Western regional police command has set up a committee to unravel the circumstances under which an unidentified officer with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) aided the cell break of a Nigerian kidnapper.

Samuel Udoetuk-Wills, the Nigerian suspect who was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of some three girls in the region, recently confessed to getting help from a CID man to escape from police custody.

Class91.3FM’s Western regional correspondent, Nana Kumi, reported on Monday, 11 January 2019 that the suspect told a court that he does not know the name of the officer but can identify him.

On the back of that, the police launched an internal inquiry into the incident.

“The regional commander has constituted a team and immediately, they need to investigate all those at the station because as of now, we don’t know exactly which CID personnel aided [the suspect]. So, those who were on duty, all the CID people there are going to be questioned,” DSP Olivia Ewurabena Adiku, the Public Relations Officer of the regional command told Accra-based Joy FM on Tuesday, 12 February 2019.

She said the team probing the matter is headed by the regional crime officer.

Udoetuk-Wills escaped from the custody of the Takoradi metropolitan police command on 30 December 2018 but was recaptured in the wee hours of Friday, 4 January 2019 by three policemen in an abandoned building in the bush at Kanssawurodu, near Takoradi.

The suspect had been arrested on 22 December 2018 in connection with the alleged kidnapping and disappearance of a number of girls, for which a circuit court had placed him in police custody to reappear on 9 January 2019. He, however, mysteriously escaped from the cell with the help of guards.
