Police in the Central Gonja district of the Northern region have revealed that some youth in the Kusuwgu and Sankpala communities broke jail and freed a criminal.
The revelation comes two days after police arrested 30 youth in the area for inflicting cutlass wounds on a woman accused of witchcraft.
According to Deputy Police Commander of the area, ASP Kwame Boadi the police in 2013 arrested and put behind bars a man suspected of killing a Fulani middle aged man.
Reports indicate that a mild confusion ensued between the youth and the police during the arrest.
ASP Kwame Boadi says the youth went and regrouped and attacked the police men on duty at the station, broke the cells and fled with the suspect.
The Deputy District Police Commander has embarked on a public education in the two communities on the need to live in peace and harmony and to eschew mob justice.
‘If you destroy a police station in a town, they will move to the next town and banks will never open their branches there, because there will be no police to provide security,’ he said.
