Suhum (E/R), Dec. 18, GNA - A 70-year-old trader, Madam Agnes Attah, has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the brutal assault on his son, Moses Adjeidu, a farmer, by one police Constable Mensah of the Ghana Police Service at Suhum. Making the appeal through the press, Mad. Attah said Adjeidu and one Sarah Asamoah lived in adjacent houses at Ali, a suburb of Suhum and that on November 28, this year, while Adjeidu was conveying his goods to the market, Sarah came and confronted him, alleging that, Adjeidu and his friends used to talk about her anytime she was out of the house. She said this developed into a misunderstanding between the two during which, Sarah raised several insults on Adjeidu and later slapped him in the face and in an attempt to retaliate, Adjeidu's hand hit one Sapeh Nunoo, a friend of Sarah but Adjeidu later apologized to Sapeh. According to Mad. Attah, on November 30, at about 15.30 hours, whiles Adjeidu was asleep, one constable Musah, accompanied with by Kwame, a police labourer came to Adjeidu's house, forced the door opened and pulled Adjeidu from his bed and started beating him.
He said this drew the attention of the people in the neighbourhood, who came to plead with Constable Musah to spare Adjeidu. She alleged that Constable Musah handcuffed Adjeidu and on the way to the police station, Sapeh allegedly gave 250,000 cedis to Constable Musah, who after receiving the money, started beating Adjeidu again and that on several occasions, used his boot to hit Adjeidu's stomach, which made him to bleed profusely. She said at the police station, Adjeidu was thrown into cells with the handcuffs, since the handcuffed key had got missing during the time Adjeidu was being assaulted.
According to Mad. Attah, one of the policemen, who was then at the counter, and was not happy with the treatment being meted out to Adjeidu, managed to open the handcuffs from Adjeidu's hand with another key.
She said Adjeidu was later granted bail, saying, because of the injury Adjeidu sustained during the beating the following day, he went to the police station for a medical form to enable him attend hospital but was allegedly refused the form.
Meanwhile, at the time of going to the press, the lost handcuff key had been found and given to the GNA reporter.
