Four persons including an 18-year-old woman, allegedly linked with a chain of robberies of electrical gadgets in some communities in Kumasi, are being held by the Police.
The suspects, believed to belong to a 20 member notorious armed gang, operates within the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kotei, Deduako and Ejisu- its outlying communities, reportedly rape some of their victims.
They were arrested together with their accomplices comprising an IT specialist and traders who aid the marketing of the booty.
The suspects are Sheriff Abdulai Asofo, 18, an illegal miner,” Sadick Mohammed alias ”Zinga”30, Daniel Gyamfi alias “JD”28 both unemployed and an 18 year old female Zakiya Abdullai Asofo, student.
Fred Owusu alias Akwasi, 28, an IT specialist, Enoch Ofori Sarpong alias “D12”, 20, unemployed, Kwame Moro alias “Fada”,30 and Nasiru Mohammed alias “Baratone”,33, both traders are their accomplices.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Nathan Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander told the media during a press briefing in Kumasi on Wednesday that the gang sends the stolen items to Owusu, the IT specialist who deletes all security information on the gadgets to make their tracking difficult.
Nasiru and Moro act as middlemen who first buy those items and resell to the public, but the nefarious deal was uncovered when police intelligence led to the arrest of suspects at a hideout.
One Argentine-made pistol and five rounds of live ammunitions were retrieved from Zakiya, the female suspect’s room.
A plasma television, assorted laptops, mobile phones and their accessories, necklaces, wrist watches, digital cameras, calculators, assorted modems, I-Pad and a cash of GH¢ 9,300.00 were also seized from them.
DCOP Boakye said they would soon be processed for court but he has invited victims to the Regional Police Command to identify the suspects to aid investigations.
He said other fugitive members of the gang are being hunted for by the police.
