Wood carver jailed for defiling eight-year-old girl

Kumasi, Jan 20, GNA - A circuit court in Kumasi has sentenced a wood carver to 14 years in jail for defiling an eight-year-old pupil. Kofi Akowuah, 21, denied the charge. Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Mr Justice Richard Mac Kogyapwah that the victim lives at Ahwiaa in the Kwabre District, where the convict also works. Prosecution said in April 2008, when Akowuah visited his senior brother at Ahwiaa, he saw the victim playing with two other children in the house.

Baffour-Kyei said the convict lured the girl into his brother's room, defiled her and warned her not to tell anyone about the case. Prosecution said the girl complained of abdominal pain and upon examination by the grandmother, she detected that blood and whitish substance oozing from the private part of the girl. Chief Insp. Baffour-Kyei said that when the girl was interrogated about the development, she told the grandmother that the convict had sex with her. Prosecution said a medical report has confirmed that the girl has been defiled.
